Artichoke suspension lamp by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen 1958.

In 1958, the Langelinie Pavillonen in Copenhagen ordered a special model from PH, which he named «Artichoke» in direct reference to its shape, which re- sembles an artichoke. The PH Artichoke is inspired by the Septima lamp designed in glass. Curves and geometric shapes are cleverly linked to reflect organic elements, a quest dear to his work. The luminaire structure consists of twelve metal arcs and 72 steal sheets. These sheets are meticulously arranged in 12 semi-circles of 6 sheets each. On the arch, the leaves are positioned so they overlap in staggered rows, thus hiding the bulb from view, but widely diffusing the light. The play of shadows created by this assembly of sheets produces an extraordinary luminous effect and the light emitted is soft and warm. Fifty years after its creation, it is still manufactured and marketed by the Danish company Louis Poulsen.
