This armchair was designed by the architect and designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It was created in 1927 for the Deutscher Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart. This series of furniture, known as the "MR" series, included chairs, armchairs, and tables, among them the MR20 armchair. At the time, this architect was actively involved in the Bauhaus movement, a German school of art and design founded in 1919 and closed in 1933. The Bauhaus aimed to merge art and craftsmanship to promote a design approach focused on functionality and simplicity, making significant contributions to the modernist movement.
In 1930, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe became the director of the Bauhaus school. He is renowned for his architectural works such as the Seagram Building in New York and the German Pavilion in Barcelona. His furniture designs have also become iconic, such as the MR10 chair and the Barcelona chair, which have become design icons.
The chair's structure is made of chrome tubular steel, with a cantilevered backrest and two curved armrests. Both the backrest and the seat are upholstered in original brown leather.
