Description
The Maralunga armchair was designed in 1973 by Vico Magistretti for the Italian firm Cassina. Known for his designs based on simple, essential shapes and the use of innovative materials for the time, he entered into numerous partnerships with the new publishers of the time, all the while following his self-imposed guiding principle to the letter. His collaboration with Cassina began in 1959 with the Carimate chair, which was a great success, but nothing compared to the Maralunga, which became a veritable icon of Italian design, winning the Compaso d'oro in 1979. The Milanese architect and designer's main brief was to create an extremely comfortable chair, and the story goes that it was Cesare Cassina who, during a visit to the workshop, punched the back of a prototype, breaking it. The broken prototype inspired the designer in his idea of offering exceptional comfort to the user. And that's how the Maralunga design was born. Still in production today, the Maralunga celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014, when Cassina redesigned its range in collaboration with the Vico Magistretti Foundation, adding a new finish to the seams of the frame and, with the 40s model, creating a removable fabric cover. And finally, the 40 Maxi, an enlarged version of the original model.
The structure consists of a tubular steel frame with elastic straps. The seat is made from CFC-free polyurethane foam with differentiated density and polyester, all covered in blue velvet. The backrest has an independent, removable headrest with an internal chain system patented by the Italian company. In very good condition, completely reupholstered in our workshop.
