Description

This iconic model was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925 during his tenure as head of the carpentry workshop at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. For its creation, he drew inspiration from his Adler bicycle, fascinated by its design and the lightness of its tubular steel frame. Fortunately, he was able to take advantage of a new technique developed by the Mannesmann company that allowed for seamless steel tubing. Innovative in its materials and technique, this design has endured over time due to a succession of manufacturer, starting with the famous German-Austrian company Thonet, which was responsible for its production until the beginning of World War II. At that time, it was not called the Wassily but the B3. It was only after the war, when the Italian company Gavina took over production, that it was named after the abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky, who attended the same school. After hearing all the praise from his friend for his new creation, the designer decided to create a copy for his private quarters. In 1968, Knoll International acquired Gavina. The Wassily chair was therefore included in the catalog and is still produced to this day. The structure is composed of 5 round, bent and chrome-plated steel tubes. Assembled by a screw system and held by cognac leather strips creating a suspension effect. The base has 4 plastic pads to avoid rubbing against the floor. In very good condition, professionally cleaned, refurbished and covered in leather. Not all chairs from the early years were labeled or embossed. Two chairs are available.

Materials: Round steel, folded, chromed and sealed. Original screws in black all still available.

Leather: Cognac colored Italian cowhide leather, pigmented and professionally finished with saddle stitching.
