Description
Gerard van den Berg created The Rock sofa in the 1970s. Produced by the company Montis, which he co-founded with his brother Ton in 1947, this entity al- lowed him to fulfill his desire to revive Dutch design—a concept he had been nurturing since the early days of his apprenticeship in his father’s workshop in Hellevoetsluis. He continued his training at the Rotterdam Technical School.
Van den Berg has a keen interest in the materials he uses, and one could argue that they are the origin of his creations, whereas the structure is generally the focal point of design. He typically uses leather, which he stretches over his structures, bringing the finesse that characterizes his style.
Through years of experimentation, the brothers developed a new upholstery technique called «Jacket,» involving stretching a piece of leather over a metal structure using a zipper. This method is notably employed in this series, as well as in other models like the Mantis or the Butterfly.
While it is no longer produced in its original form, a version with a lowered back is now available.
The structure consists of a metal frame filled with foam and upholstered in black leather. It features a deep seat, and its imposing back allows for zoning your space while providing exceptional comfort.
In very good condition, it has been completely reupholstered in our workshop.
