Description
The Maralunga sofa was created in 1973 by Vico Magistretti for the Italian company Cassina. Known for his creations that employ simple, essential forms and the use of innovative materials for the time, he embarked on numerous partnerships with new publishers during those years, while steadfastly adhering to the guiding thread he set for himself. The collaboration with Cassina began in 1959 with the Carimate chair, which enjoyed considerable success, but it pales in comparison to the Maralunga, which has become a true icon of Italian design, winning the Compasso d'Oro award in 1979. For its creation, the Milanese architect and designer's primary directive was extreme comfort. The story goes that it was Cesare Cassina who, during a visit to the workshop, struck a prototype's backrest with his fist, causing it to break. This shattered prototype illuminated the designer's idea of offering exceptional comfort to the user. And it is said that this is how the design of the Maralunga was born. Continuously produced to this day, it celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014. On this occasion, Cassina reimagined its range in collaboration with the Vico Magistretti Foundation, introducing new seam finishes to the structure and, with the 40s model, the creation of a removable fabric cover. Lastly, the 40 Maxi, an enlarged version of the original model, was introduced.
